Stage 8 Úbeda - Cazorla (158.7km)

The weekend before the first rest day begins with an undulating stage. The high mountains are once again ignored in this round, with a change coming only on Sunday. The finish is on a third-category climb.

The eighth stage of the Vuelta a España spans 159 kilometers from Úbeda to Cazorla. The Vuelta remains in Andalusia, but this time it avoids major Andalusian cities. From the starting point in Úbeda, the first seventy kilometers head northeast along the A32 to the Guadalquivir River. Here, the stage becomes more interesting in terms of both nature and profile.

After 105 kilometers, the first climb of the day is scheduled: the Puerto Mirador de las Palomas (7.3 kilometers at 5.9 percent). This climb is designated as second category by the Vuelta organizer ASO.

After the Puerto Mirador de las Palomas, there is a long descent to Peal de Becerro, where the finale truly begins. From an altitude of 500 meters, the route gradually climbs to 900 meters. After a short descent, the final climb to Cazorla begins.

The final climb to Cazorla is 4.2 kilometers long with an average gradient of 8.2 percent. The general classification riders can create some time differences here. This happened in 2015 when Esteban Chaves won ahead of then-leader Tom Dumoulin and briefly reclaimed the leader’s jersey.
