Stage 5 Fuente del Maestre - Sevilla (177.0km)
On Wednesday, August 21, the sprinters will again have their opportunity in the Vuelta as the peloton heads towards Andalusia. This is a brief stop on the way to the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range, which is scheduled for the following day in the Vuelta.
The fifth stage covers a total of 170 kilometers and begins once again in the rural region of Extremadura. The stage features no categorized climbs, but the first hundred kilometers are quite undulating. The starting point, Fuente del Maestre, is situated at approximately 450 meters above sea level, and from there, the peloton will cruise at altitudes between 300 and 750 meters for a long time.
The finale, however, is truly flat. In the last 45 kilometers, there are hardly any elevation changes in the course. From the northern part of the city, the peloton will then ride into the center of Seville.
In the final kilometers, the ASO will provide beautiful images of Spain’s fourth-largest city, which gained prominence due to the Moorish occupation in the eighth century AD and subsequently grew into one of the most powerful cities in the world. The Moorish influences are still visible in the city's architecture today.
In the last kilometer, the peloton will make a sharp right turn, after which the road to the finish is straight through the beautiful Parque de María Luisa in Seville. The sprinters will undoubtedly have their moment here.
Seville last served as a finish location in the Vuelta fourteen years ago, when the city hosted a team time trial. The well-oiled machine of HTC-Columbia won that event, featuring riders like Mark Cavendish, Tejay van Garderen, Lars Bak, and the Velits brothers.
