Stage 1 Lisboa - Oeiras (12.0km)

The Vuelta a España will start on Saturday, August 17, in Lisbon, Portugal. This will be only the fifth time that the Vuelta begins outside of Spain, following previous Gran Salidas in Lisbon (1997), Assen (2009), Nimes (2017), and Utrecht (2022).

Thus, Lisbon will host the Vuelta start for the second time in 2024. In 1997, the Portuguese capital saw a Vuelta peloton with stars such as Alex Zülle, Laurent Jalabert, and Roberto Heras depart for a flat stage to Estoril. After just over four hours of racing, it was the Dane Lars Michaelsen who claimed his only stage win ever in a grand tour.

In the 79th edition of the Vuelta, spectators can enjoy Lisbon for a bit longer. A twelve-kilometer time trial to the nearby Oeiras is planned. However, the historic center of the capital will be bypassed: in the suburb of Restelo, the riders will head west along the coast to Oeiras.

The starting signal will be given at one of Lisbon's historical highlights. From the Praça do Império (Empire Square), where the riders have a view of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a 16th-century monastery commissioned by Portuguese King Manuel I and completed after a hundred years. Because this monastery is closely linked to the Portuguese royal family, it is considered one of the great symbols of the Portuguese state. The monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983.

In the first kilometer, the riders head straight to the coast, passing by the beautiful gardens of the Praça do Império before making a right turn. From then on, it's almost a straight shot to the finish. This route is not very exciting or dangerous, but given recent opening time trials in the Vuelta, this is likely a deliberate choice by the organizers.

At the start of the twelve kilometers, the riders will also pass by the world-famous Belém Tower, which, along with the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, is on the World Heritage list and a reminder of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, particularly the explorer Vasco da Gama, who was the first navigator to sail to India via the Cape of Good Hope, proving that the Indian Ocean could also be reached by sea.

As mentioned, the finish of the first stage will be in Oeiras. Sérgio Paulinho, once a valued domestique for Astana, Radioshack, and Saxo Bank-Tinkoff, hails from here. Who will claim the first red jersey?
