Stage 1 Rotterdam - Den Haag (123.0km)

The Tour de France Femmes kicks off with a stage from Rotterdam to The Hague. The race starts in Vlaardingen, in the western part of Rotterdam. What follows is a typical Dutch stage with minimal elevation gain. However, the organizers have managed to include a spot where the first points for the polka-dot jersey can be earned.

These mountain points are available at the end of the Maasdelta Tunnel, at about twenty meters above sea level. The lowest point of the tunnel is 26.5 meters below sea level, meaning the riders will have to conquer around 46.5 meters of elevation. A clever touch from the organizers.

After the hopefully exciting battle for the first mountain points, the peloton will head towards The Hague, where a mass sprint is anticipated. There are no significant obstacles in the final. The last few hundred meters, which run close to the beach in Kijkduin, slightly incline. Thus, it could well turn into a Dutch duel between Lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kool, a matchup we've seen several times this season.

The finish city, The Hague, has previously hosted major cycling victories. For instance, Filippo Ganna won an individual time trial over 8.4 kilometers in the 2019 BinckBank Tour, beating Edoardo Affini and Jos van Emden.

Twenty-eight years earlier, Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel won an individual time trial through the political capital of the Netherlands. The two-time world champion was too fast for her competitors with an average speed of 46.3 kilometers per hour on the 11th day of the Tour de la CEE féminin.
