Stage 7 Hagetmau - Bordeaux (175.0km)

A day after the tough stage over the Tourmalet, the peloton is finally and definitively out of the Pyrenees. Most riders will be pleased after the first six treacherous stages, and the sprinters will be downright delighted. They finally get another chance at stage success.

This Friday’s stage starts in the little-known town of Hagetmau. This small village of just 5,000 inhabitants has never before hosted the Tour de France, so it will certainly be a big celebration. After the start, the riders will quickly head north toward Bordeaux. There won’t be much excitement along the way, as the roads are mostly flat.

On the way to the sprinter city of Bordeaux, the only climb is the Côte de Béguey (1.6 kilometers at 4.3%), located 40 kilometers from the finish, but no climber is expected to be dropped here. So a ‘regular’ sprint is expected in Bordeaux.

The capital of the Gironde has already hosted a Tour stage 133 times, and in the past it has predominantly been sprinters who won here. Think of Jasper Philipsen in 2023 or Mark Cavendish in 2010. In the past, Dutch riders have also won here regularly. Notable examples include Cees Priem, Bert Oosterbosch, Jan Raas, and Jean-Paul van Poppel in the 1980s, and of course Servais Knaven in 2003. He is the last Dutchman to win here.
