Stage 2 Tarragona - Barcelona (178.4km)
The second stage of the Tour is immediately a kind of Catalan Liège–Bastogne–Liège. In the finale in Barcelona, seven categorized climbs await. The finish is also uphill, with a sprint toward the Olympic Stadium.
The stage begins on Sunday in the ancient Roman port city of Tarragona, after which the riders cover the first 90 kilometers along the coast before heading into the Catalan interior. There the climbs begin, starting halfway through the stage with the Côte de Begues (6.1 kilometers at 6.5%).
After this climb, there is a brief lull, but with just over fifty kilometers to go, the race—at least in terms of climbing—bursts open. First comes the longer ascent of the Côte de Santa Creu d’Olorda (8.4 kilometers at 4.5%), followed by real leg-breakers on a local circuit in Barcelona that will cause plenty of pain.
On that local circuit, the Côte du Château de Montjuïc (1.3 kilometers at 9.3%) and the Côte du Stade Olympique (600 meters at 7%) must be conquered three times, and it is very likely that the first of these climbs, with its steep gradients, will create casualties. Especially since the summit of that climb comes only 2.3 kilometers before the finish line.
